THE DFSIN DIFFERENCE

Alina's Story

“OUR POTENTIAL IS DICTATED BY OUR MINDSET.”

Alina’s journey into financial advising began in public audit as a Chartered Professional Accountant, followed by more than a decade in corporate finance. Today, she brings that strong technical foundation into a client‑centred advisory practice—while also balancing life as a wife and young mother. What she values most about her work is the ability to be her own boss and make a meaningful, lasting impact on the people she serves.

“Our potential is dictated by our own mindset. Being a wife, mother and financial advisor are all cornerstones of my identity.”

A CONVERSATION WITH ALINA ROBERTSON

My career started out as a Chartered Accountant (CA, CPA) in public audit and evolved to supporting the Finance team of a REIT. With over 10 years of work experience in the corporate world, I decided it was time to be my own boss. Pursuing my interest in personal finance proved to be a very fulfilling change. I love how client-centric and impactful my days are as a financial advisor.

Our financial centre offers a unique sense of camaraderie. We not only work and train together, but we also have fun and support one another. I have established meaningful professional relationships with many colleagues, both within my office and the entire network, many of whom I consider my mentors.

Managing a diverse book of business requires different skillsets. Our multi-generational team approach has proven to be a successful strategy for attracting and retaining clients. I am grateful to have been offered a role as an associate supporting an experienced financial planner, who was my financial advisor for many years prior, and consider this the golden opportunity of my career.

Our potential is dictated by our own mindset. Being a wife, mother and financial advisor are all cornerstones of my identity. At times it is challenging, but certainly doable. Coming to the office regularly helps me remain focused. My supportive husband, family and business partner have made it possible for me to continue challenging myself professionally.

Invest in yourself and your education, but don’t underestimate the power of hands-on learning. The more clients you meet, the more practical experience you will gain. The more mistakes you make, and the quicker you will learn. Be consistent. Stay motivated. Make this business your own.

Being a financial advisor is a lifelong learning commitment. The economy, market, tax rules, and products available are constantly changing. The more we know, the better equipped we are to service our clients. I am grateful to receive support from my financial centre to pursue my CFP and CLU designations. Beyond that, my network provides countless opportunities to learn from the best practices of other advisors.
