Billy Kailla started his financial services career over 20 years ago. After working for two of Canada’s major banks for several years, he decided to become an independent advisor to offer the best products and solutions to his clients. Since then, he has not only managed his clients’ wealth but has also built long-term relationships, ensuring their ever-changing financial needs are met. In addition to having a successful practice himself, Billy also leads a team of like-minded advisors in our Surrey office, part of DFSIN West.

To me, it’s essential to build a team culture that reflects our values. This network recognizes and supports that, which allows myself and my team to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

A CONVERSATION WITH BILLY KAILLA

I grew up in a small town in British Columbia, where the close-knit community shaped my early years. After completing high school, I moved to the Lower Mainland to pursue post-secondary studies. Shortly thereafter, I secured a position as a bank teller at one of the major banks.

Over the years, I advanced through various roles within the bank, gaining valuable experience and insights into the financial industry. However, I eventually realized that to truly provide my clients with unbiased product selections and personalized advice, I needed to become an independent advisor. This decision led me to join a reputable brand that aligns with my values.

To be a successful advisor, you must have a genuine love for people, as this is essential for establishing trust. I always tell prospective recruits that this is, first and foremost, a relationship business. Analyzing charts, creating presentations, and recommending investments are important, but they come second to building strong, trusting relationships with clients.

Coming from the bank, it was important for me to join an organization with a nationally recognized brand, and Desjardins checked this box. Additionally, I wanted to be part of an organization that values camaraderie and culture, with a business model to support full independence so I am able to always act in my clients' best interests. DFSIN excels in all these areas, making it the ideal choice for me.

I believe there is always room for improvement, even if you are at the top of your game in sports or business. Many successful advisors, however, are not part of a team culture in their business. Working within a strong, growth-oriented team allows you to learn from those around you, as success breeds success. This network recognizes the importance of this dynamic and provides opportunities to learn from top advisors across the country through conferences, webinars, and other events.

This industry can be a lonely place if you operate on your own. My vision has always been to create an environment where advisors can collaborate and participate in team-building events. I also emphasize professional workspaces, as I believe that attracting affluent clients requires working in a high-end, professional office.

To achieve this, I implemented the "build it and they will come" strategy. I took the risk and built the office space, confident that I would fill it up. And fill it up I did! Currently, we are at capacity and looking to expand our office space as I foresee continued growth with like-minded advisors over the next several years.

I've been having this discussion frequently over the last few months, and my message remains consistent. DFSIN allows us to run an independent business with full autonomy, while providing the support of a nationally recognized brand. Advisors are fortunate to be in this industry, as it can be very lucrative. However, by working within the right culture, you can enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

I operate my business with full autonomy. I’m never pushed to sell a certain product. I am truly independent, but at the same time I have the full support of a nationally recognized brand.
